Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen 401(k) Savings
Plan, whose members include former Conrail Engineers working
for CSX Transportation, and Conrail Shared Assets Areas. As
Alternate General Chairman, Brother Louis would succeed the
General Chairman, in the event of a vacancy.
Jim Jim began his railroad career with Conrail, hiring as
a Trainman in 1976, working as a Trainman and Conductor, and
was selected for Engineer's Training in 1987. Brother Louis
earned promotion to Locomotive Engineer in September of that
year.
In 1987, Brother Louis joined BLE Division 752 in Albany,
New York, and later transferred to Division 659 in Buffalo.
Shortly after his transfer, Jim was elected to Local Chairman
of that Division in 1989. In his 30+ years of railroad service,
Jim served as both Local Chairman and Secretary Treasurer
for Division 659; he transferred to Division 421, and was
elected Local Chairman Division 421 in 2003 and 2006. Brother
Louis served one term as Alternate Secretary/Treasurer of
the Conrail Committee of Adjustment (1997-2001); he was voted
General Committee Secretary/Treasurer in 2004 and again in
2007, when he was elected to the new post of Alternate General
Chairman.
Jim is a graduate of the BLET Local Chairmen's Workshop at
the George Meany Center for Labor Studies - The National Labor
College, Silver Springs, Maryland.
Brother Louis is married to the former Janet Makowski, and
the couple has two sons, Shaun and Chris. Jim and his wife
reside in Tonawanda, New York, where Brother Louis also performs
additional service to the community as a Democratic Councilman,
as well as a Committeeman for the Boy Scouts of America.
